Why Use Malt Extract Agar Plates?

Malt agar is one of the most popular media for mushroom cultures. Most species grow well on it. In addition, the clear surface makes contamination easy to spot. As a result, you can keep your cultures clean and select the strongest growth.

How to Use Malt Extract Agar Plates

  1. First, clean your workspace and wear nitrile gloves.
  2. Next, add spores, a tissue sample or a drop of liquid culture.
  3. Then seal the edge of each plate with Parafilm.
  4. After that, keep the plates at room temperature and check them daily.
  5. Finally, move clean growth to a new plate, to grain or to a liquid culture vial.

Plate Care and Storage

Keep the plates sealed until you need them. In addition, store them upside down so condensation does not drip onto the agar. Before use, let cold plates warm up to room temperature. As a result, the surface stays dry and clean. Finally, throw away any plate that shows mold or bacteria.

More Tips

Work in still air or in front of a flowhood. Also, label every plate with the strain and date. Store unused plates sealed in a cool, dark place. Want plates for spores instead? Then choose our low-nutrient spore starter agar plates.
